The Livestock Emissions & Abatement Research Network (LEARN) was established in November 2007. It is an international research network focused on improving the understanding of greenhouse gas emissions from livestock agriculture. This idea was raised at side events on animal agriculture and land use at the United Nations Climate Change meeting held in Bonn in May 2007. It was clear from these discussions held in Bonn that there is a desire for greater international collaboration.
The objectives of LEARN are to:
To improve understanding, measurement and monitoring of non-CO2 greenhouse gas emissions from animal agriculture at all scales;
To facilitate the development of cost effective and practical greenhouse gas mitigation solutions.
LEARN will focus on information sharing, facilitate discussion and encourage face to face contact with researchers around the world.
Four initial focus areas have been identified:
Methane emissions from ruminant livestock
Nitrous oxide emissions from ruminant livestock
Integrated whole farming system impacts at all scales( including region and watershed)
National livestock inventory development
Through LEARN we hope to encourage research collaborations that are active in nature, rather than an occasional exchange of ideas. It is envisaged that the network will involve the exchange of data, people and joint projects that contribute towards continuous learning and knowledge development. There may also be scope to evolve the network to provide industry and policy partnership opportunities in the future.
